LIBERIA

Liberia is located on the Atlantic coast in West Africa and encompasses a territory of 43,000 square miles. The country shares borders with Sierra Leone to the northwest, Guinea to the north, and Côte d’Ivoire to the east. The country is rich in natural resources including iron ore, timber, diamonds, and gold, and provides a favorable
environment for growing rubber trees.

Liberia population is around 5.5 million people, and the capital and largest city is
Monrovia. Liberia is divided into 15 counties and 90 districts, and its population is
diverse, with over 20 indigenous languages spoken. The official language is English,
and it is one of the poorest countries in the world.
Liberia is Africas oldest republic, and it was founded by freed American and Caribbean
slaves. Liberia is rich in resources, including gold, diamonds, iron ore, natural rubber,
rice, cassava, bananas, and palm oil. Liberia has an equatorial climate, with high
temperatures and heavy rainfall from May to October. Liberia is still recovering from a
20-year period of civil wars that ended in 2003.
Liberia is not only one of the world’s poorest countries. The small West African nation
also struggles with the effects of two civil wars, Ebola and COVID-19. National poverty
levels remain high. Gender and income inequalities are still pronounced, and it is
estimated that 57 percent of school-aged children remain out of school. On top of this,
rising costs of commodities following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, have added to
Liberia’s economic challenges.

Religious Violence

Religious violence in Liberia has included ritual killings, forced initiations, and riots. Liberia's constitution protects freedom of religion, but its difficult to separate religious and ethnic tensions.

Ritual killings

  • Some believe that members of traditional Indigenous religions perform ritual killings to gain power

  • The body parts of people believed to be powerful are considered most effective for ritual purposes

  • Some past fighters during the civil war reportedly engaged in ritual killings

  • Some ritual killings are believed to bestow power onto those conducting the ritual

Forced initiations

  • Leaders of traditional Poro and Sande secret societies have been accused of forcing
    members into the societies

Riots

  • There has always been riots breaking out in Liberia's capital and its surroundings
    between Muslims and Christians

  • Riots have resulted in deaths and injuries

Other religious-related issues

  • Societal abuse or discrimination based on religious affiliation, belief, or practice

  • Expulsion of students based on witchcraft accusations

  • Some reports of traditional “sassywood” practices, which are trials by ordeal

THE ALL-KNOWING GOD has commanded the Heart of Compassion Evangelistic Ministries (HOCEM) to have its presence in the Republic of Liberia. This was done by divine connection and/or revelation through the Spirit of God.

Working in Liberia, HOCEM has initiated a four-pillar strategic approach to bring hope and freedom by demonstrating God’s love through acts of compassion. A four-pillar strategic approach refers to a strategy built on four key foundational elements, representing distinct areas of focus by HOCEM, which include the following:

1. Evangelism and Church Planting
2. Christian Educational Institutions
3. Relief Work and Missions
4. Children’s Ministries

Compassion Medical Clinic

Compassion Medical Clinic (CMC)

The Compassion Medical Clinic is closely working with the Ministry of Health in Liberia to effectively and efficiently deliver comprehensive, quality health services that are equitable, accessible and sustainable for everyone.

Heart of Compassion Evangelistic Ministries (HOCEM) established a clinic in Liberia (West
Africa) and is serving over thousands of patients. It is our fervent prayer that each of those
patients will hear the good news of Christ. HOCEM works to see God glorified as people are
healed, saved and equipped.
We walk with Christ to reach the lost in Liberia, by providing compassionate, professional
medical care to all in need, and equipping Christian medical professionals to extend this vision
to everyone.
The Clinic’s staff closely work with Heart of Compassion Evangelistic Ministries to provide
holistic evangelism throughout the medical campus and within Liberia. We empower medical
professionals through our training programs, and we develop strategies to engage the
local communities in innovative ways.

At Compassion Medical Clinic, we offer quality health care (with compassion) to a population
who desperately needs it.

Under one of the pillars of Heart of Compassion Evangelistic Ministries the Compassion Medical
Clinic was established in 2019, but first it started as a pharmacy. Seeing the growing needs of the sick

and hurting people in Liberia, the CEO, James H Briggs, Sr. (a compassionate God-fearing
Evangelist), was empowered to glorify God through a God-giving gift to have a "heart of
compassion.” God has given him this vision to glorify Him by having a “heart of compassion,”
preaching His word, equipping people and sending them out to do the same—the clinic is one
place that people need to know Christ.

Growth: CMC

To continue the good work the Lord is doing in Liberia, we need your support through prayer, finances, and service. Below is a proposed 50-bedroom hospital.
